Discontinuation of Textile Recovery Boxes
We regret to inform our community that the textile recovery boxes, introduced to four of Strathbogie Shire’s transfer stations in November 2023 through our partnership with Upcycle4Better (U4B), will no longer be available.
This change is effective immediately and beyond Council’s control. It is a decision made solely by U4B in response to significant challenges impacting their operations.
U4B has advised that due to global market conditions, including a saturation of unwanted garments and declining demand from buyers and recyclers, they can no longer sustain the operational costs associated with textile recovery.
Council is disappointed to see this valued service come to an end, especially given the strong community response and participation.
We thank our residents for their support of the initiative and encourage you to explore alternative recycling options, including donating items in good condition to local charities, and consider mindful purchasing habits.
In addition to donations, you can consider repurposing, repairing, or upcycling textiles at home, or checking with local animal shelters that may accept old textiles for bedding or other uses.
Council remains committed to sustainability and will continue to explore future opportunities that support waste reduction and recycling within the Shire.
