Celebrating our volunteers with a night of comedy
More than 125 local volunteers were treated to a well-deserved night of laughs on Friday 22 May as Strathbogie Shire Council celebrated the people who help keep the community running during National Volunteer Week.
The free Comedy for a Cause event brought together volunteers from across the region, including many who played a vital role in bushfire recovery efforts over recent months.
Held as part of National Volunteer Week celebrations, the event recognised the enormous contribution volunteers make to local communities every day.
Australian comedy favourite Dave Thornton headlined the event alongside Brendhan Lovegrove, Sonia Di Iorio and Evan Hocking, delivering a night full of laughter, connection
and appreciation.
Strathbogie Mayor Cr Scott Jeffery said the evening was about recognising the volunteers who quietly give their time and energy to support others.
“Our volunteers are the heartbeat of our towns,” Mayor Jeffery said.
“They are the people who step up, help out and make things happen behind the scenes every single day.
“Without volunteers, our communities simply would not function the way they do.
“This was a small but heartfelt way to say thank you and give people a chance to relax, connect and enjoy themselves — because they truly deserve it.”
The event struck a chord with attendees, with one volunteer describing the evening as “just what I needed”.
“I would like to say thank you for the great night last night. It was very enjoyable, very funny and just what I needed,” they said.
Council thanked all volunteers for their continued generosity and contribution to the community.
Volunteer opportunities continue throughout the year, with community members encouraged to get involved and make a difference through volunteering.
