Volunteers’ dedication in the spotlight
Strathbogie Shire Council has recognised its dedicated volunteers with a morning tea, certificate presentation and movie screening.
The ceremony coincided with National Volunteers Week (Monday 17 May to Sunday 23 May) which is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers.
Strathbogie Shire Council has more than 80 volunteers across its Visitor Information Centres, the Euroa Community Cinema, its Committees of Management and Community Action Groups.
Above and beyond members of the Strathbogie Shire community volunteer for emergency services, sport and leisure clubs, art and craft clubs, environmental groups, men’s sheds and much more.
Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Chris Raeburn said the tireless efforts of volunteers made up the foundation of communities across Australia.
“Without volunteers being a part of our community, we would not have such a vibrant community,” Cr Raeburn said.
“I would like to thank all of the volunteers across Strathbogie Shire for dedicating their time to making sure our community is a fantastic place to live and visit.”
The event was also attended by Member for Euroa Steph Ryan who helped to present certificates to volunteers from across the Strathbogie Shire.
The Strathbogie Shire Council’s Volunteers Day was held on Tuesday May 18 at the Euroa Community Cinema.
Volunteer Profile: Di Mackrell
After spending more than 40 years as Euroa Secondary College’s librarian, Di Mackrell was eager to lend her skills to the community in retirement.
Originally from the United States of America, Di runs a local choir and ukulele group which she has been doing for the past 10 years.
It was after her retirement four years ago that Di also began volunteering at The Hub – Euroa’s Visitor Information Centre.
“It is amazing the amount of people you meet there,” she said.
After also seeing an advert calling on volunteers for the Euroa Community Cinema, Di also wanted to lend a hand.
“It is such a good service for our community,” she said.
“I was happy to give up a couple of nights a month; it’s such a small part of your time.”
For Di, volunteering gives her a great sense of pride.
“You really do get back just as much as you give,” she said.
