Fun and learning at supported playgroups

Strathbogie Shire Council is delivering Smalltalk supported playgroups for eligible families with children from newborns to school age.

The Shire’s Smalltalk supported playgroups provide a place for parents or caregivers and their children to play and socialise with others, supported by an early childhood professional.

The 10-week program is offered during school terms in Euroa, Nagambie and Avenel (subject to numbers) and delivered by early childhood professionals. The sessions are free and include a healthy morning tea.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Cr Chris Raeburn said Council recently employed Supported Playgroup Facilitators, Frances Cummings and Katie Long, to deliver sessions across the Shire for eligible families.

“Families have fun, play, learn and make friendships at supported playgroups,” Cr Raeburn said.

“Smalltalk supported playgroups are designed to improve the learning outcomes of children aged 0-6 years old.”

The Smalltalk program is funded by the State Government’s Department of Education and Training and the model was developed by the Parenting Research Centre.

Ms Cummings said the playgroup sessions were a great way for young families to meet others in their area.

“The sessions are about having fun, playing, socialising and making connections,” she said.

“We provide tips and strategies for parents and caregivers to support their child’s learning in a fun and relaxed way.”

Ms Cummings said the sessions included group activities and individual experiences for children, and supported parents with knowledge and skills to enhance their child’s learning.

“Activities include messy play which may be difficult to provide at home, painting, and other fun opportunities. We also read a book, sing nursery rhymes, and provide morning tea,” Ms Cummings said.

“Our playgroups support social and emotional development and school-readiness development.”

To enrol, families must meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Holder of Health Care Card or equivalent
• Identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
• Care for children in kinship (out-of-home care)
• Children referred by Child First or Child Protection
• Families enrolled in enhanced Maternal and Child Health Services
• Some families may qualify under social isolation, or for in-home support either separate to, or in addition to supported playgroup.
