The joy could be witnessed in every corner of the upgraded Jubilee Park Play Space during its official opening.

Students from Avenel Primary School, who also assisted in the process of selecting new play equipment for the space, attended the event along with representatives from the Jubilee Park Committee of Management, Avenel Active Inc, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action and Council.

The play equipment upgrades were made possible thanks to Council and the shade sails were installed due to the work of Jubilee Park Committee of Management and Avenel Active Inc. who secured a State Government grant.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said it was fantastic to see the children enjoying the upgraded play space at the event.

“The students shared how much they enjoyed the new play space and it was fantastic seeing all the children putting it to great use.

“Huge congratulations to school captains Camilla Bull and Koby Sidebottom who gave a fabulous speech as well as Anne Douglas representing the Jubilee Committee of Management and Avenel Active Inc.”

Those at the opening celebration took part in cupcake decorating as a fitting tribute to open the upgraded area.

“I especially wish to give a big thank you to Taungurung elder Uncle Shane Monk who welcomed us with a smoking ceremony, an experience that was a first for many on the day. Uncle Shane shared the story and cultural significance of smoking ceremonies and had a possum skin cloak which attendees were invited to try on.” Cr Binks said.

Mayor Binks lead the charge going down the slide through a colourful banner to officially declare the play space open, followed by Avenel Primary School students.

“We are so grateful for the support of the primary school, kindergarten and local community as well as Jubilee Committee of Management and Avenel Active Inc. who assisted with this project.”

Among the new equipment is an all-abilities swing, stepper bridge, fixed hanging rings, scaling wall, wave bridge, fibreglass slide and inclined net bridge.

Installation of the shade sails at the Jubilee Park children’s playground was supported by Victorian Government funding.
