ChromaScape – Transcending the Boundaries of Reality – coming to ARTBOX soon
Having found its place in Jacobsons Outlook, Nagambie, ARTBOX is gearing up for yet another exciting exhibition.
Artist Philip Hickingbotham has showcased his work in prestigious competitions and galleries across Australia, including the National Gallery of Victoria, and his latest exhibit ‘ChromaScape’ will be on display in Nagambie this December.
“Our planet is filled with living beings who experience the visual world in completely different ways than us,” he said.
“Many other creatures have extra senses such as ultraviolet vision, extra colour receptors, and even echolocation.
“The colours we see are detected by three colour photoreceptors: red, blue, and green. Other creatures, such as dragonflies, have up to 30 colour receptors. This means they can see colours humans cannot imagine.”
In this exhibition, familiar landscapes of our world come alive in a vibrant array of colours and forms, transcending the boundaries of reality. The subject matter in these paintings is to be viewed uniquely through the lens of the diverse creatures inhabiting our planet. Inspired by the remarkable optics of various living beings, this body of work delves into the idea animals perceive the world in scientifically distinct ways. Much like the creatures that navigate our shared home using infrared vision, the paintings on display reimagine landscapes in hues that defy conventional forms.
“Through the lens of my artistic interpretation, viewers are invited to contemplate the intricate perspectives of beings that navigate our world, guided by wavelengths beyond our human spectrum,” Mr Hickingbotham said.

ChromaScape, Nagambie, runs from 9 December 2023 to 1 January 2024 in ARTBOX at Jacobson Outlook, Nagambie.
