Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance marks 15 years of regional climate action

Strathbogie Shire Council is proud to celebrate 15 years since the formation of the Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance (GMCA).

Council became an inaugural member of the GMCA when it was formed, becoming part of a network of 17 committed local government, agency & alpine resort partners across the Goulburn and Upper Murray regions.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said the GMCA is responsible for responding and adapting to climate change through collaboration, advocacy, and innovative projects.

“It has been recognised as best practise in addressing climate change winning a number of awards over the years, including a number of Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards,” she said.

Over the past 15 years, the GMCA through collaboration and advocacy has directly mitigated over 75,000 tonnes CO₂-e emissions, while its projects have saved members over $6.7 million in efficiencies through innovative projects and partnerships.

Collectively with these savings, plus research and project grants, the Alliance has made possible some $10.5 million of benefit to communities of the Goulburn Murray regions since 2007.

GMCA chair Cr Rohan Webb from Mansfield Shire reflected on the achievements of the Alliance, saying “Fifteen years of regional collaboration on climate change and sustainability is a remarkable achievement worthy of reflection and celebration.”

“The next 10 years will be a galvanising time for the Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance as the region rises to the significant challenges and opportunities of climate change. We are in the midst of a major energy and climate-adaptive transformation, and GMCA is well placed to help guide our members through, into, and beyond 2030.”
