Join Council’s 16 Days of Activism event to hear from guest speaker Kym Valentine

Strathbogie Shire Council is proud to participate in this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign in Victoria.

This year’s campaign encourages all Victorians to work together to prevent violence against women.

Council’s campaign will include an ARTBOX exhibition in Nagambie featuring the orange cut out people with our key 16 days of Activism messaging as well as an event in Nagambie.

The Nagambie event – Change the Story – will feature a powerful talk from someone with lived experience of gender-based violence – former Neighbours actress Kym Valentine.

Kym will be sharing her passion for raising awareness and challenging stereotypes about those who experience family violence. Using her compassion and warmth Kym will share ways community can support each other to recognise and respond to family and gender based violence.

Following this, joint representatives from Safe and Equal – Victoria’s peak body for specialist family violence services – will facilitate a conversation with Kym Valentine and Hannah Dwyer in understanding the movement towards ending family and gender based violence in Victoria.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks encouraged the community to attend this incredible opportunity.

“We know gender-based violence is something that is not easy to discuss but it’s so important we recognise how we can create change throughout society,” she said.

“The 16 Days of Activism campaign is a fantastic way to push these messages to the forefront of people’s minds and ensure we aren’t turning a blind eye just because it’s a challenging issue.”

The event will be held on December 8 from 12.30pm at the Nagambie Mechanics Institute with a light luncheon and tea and coffee provided.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign will end on Sunday 10 December, which marks the global Human Rights Day.

“We can all work together to change the story about violence against women,” Cr Binks said.
