Navigating the Shift: Helping Young People and Families Understand Recent Social Media Changes
Strathbogie Shire Council invites parents, carers, and young people to an online community session on 17 December 2025, at 5.30pm, to unpack recent changes to social media and what they mean for everyday life.
From 10 December 2025, new age requirements for social media platforms have come into effect. These changes require age-restricted platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under the age of 16 from creating new accounts or continuing to use existing ones.
The aim is to strengthen online safety and reduce exposure to digital harm, giving families more time to prepare and support young people through this transition.
Mayor Cr Scott Jeffery said these changes affect many families and highlighted the importance of community support:
“We want to make sure no one feels alone in navigating the changes. By coming together as a community, we can share knowledge, support each other, and keep our young people safe online. This session is a great opportunity to do just that.”
The session will help families understand:
- Which apps and platforms have been affected
- The behaviours the eSafety Commissioner is addressing
- Why these changes were introduced and what they mean for young people
The discussion will explore how these shifts are impacting young people, where vulnerabilities can arise, and practical ways families and communities can stay connected and supported.
Guest Speaker: Sarah Barnbrook – an award-winning international advocate for digital safety, ethical technology, and the prevention of technology-facilitated gender-based violence. As Founder of Away from Keyboard (AFK) Inc. and an accredited UN delegate, Sarah brings global expertise and lived experience to help communities navigate emerging risks.
The Strathbogie Shire team will also share local opportunities for young people to stay engaged over summer, including activities, youth-friendly spaces, and ways to stay informed.
