Greening Euroa project celebrated at inaugural Cricket Standpipe Cup at Euroa’s Friendlies Oval
Euroa’s Friendlies Oval, which provides the entry point into town off the Hume Freeway, played host to the inaugural Cricket Standpipe Cup on November 4.
Euroa and Shepparton United’s A-Grade teams battled it out on the oval, which is set to benefit from the Greening Euroa Project, providing the perfect location for the match.
The innovative community driven project will use recycled water to irrigate Euroa’s public green spaces during the summer months. It is a join initiative of the key user groups, Strathbogie Shire Council and Goulburn Valley Water (GVW).
Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said the proposal was the first of its kind in Victoria.
“It’s climate smart, cost efficient and community inspired,” she said.
Cr Binks congratulated Euroa and Shepparton United on a well fought match which kicked off with GVW’s Kirk Dalziel tossing the coin which he thoroughly enjoyed reliving with several visitors to the event’s water café.
GVW set up its water café on site, at fine leg, which meant the fast bowlers were all regular customers throughout the match.
As the day, and the match, heated up, water bottles were popular with the crowd, as most of them watched on for the entire 90 overs of the game.
Council officers were on site to hand out Greening Euroa fridge magnets and provide details on the project.
Shepparton United came out ahead on the day and were the winners of the Greening Euroa Cricket Standpipe Cup. The trophy was presented to captain Sam Nash at the end of the match by Council’s Deputy Mayor Cr Paul Murray.
GVW Managing Director Steve Capewell said GVW was committed to securing water supply options for its regional towns.
“We installed our first recycled water standpipe in Euroa in partnership with the Strathbogie Shire Council,” he said.
“The purple standpipe which has been really successful and it’s fantastic to see the community leading the Greening Euroa project to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the town’s water sources.”
