Navigating the Shift: Helping Young People and Families Understand Social Media Changes

17 December, 2025 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Navigating the Shift: Helping Young People and Families Understand Social Media Changes

Join us for an online community session designed to help parents, carers, and young people make sense of the recent social media changes and what they mean for everyday life.

We’ll walk through:

  • Which apps and platforms are affected
  • The behaviours the eSafety Commissioner is addressing
  • Why these changes are happening now

Together, we’ll explore how young people might feel during this transition, where vulnerabilities can arise, and practical ways families and communities can stay steady and connected. The Strathbogie Shire team will also share clear pathways for keeping kids engaged over summer—from local activities to youth-friendly spaces and ways to stay informed.

This is your chance to ask questions, check in on how everyone is coping, and gather practical tips to help young people feel supported, safe, and included as digital life evolves.

Date: Wednesday 17 December 2025

Time: 5.30pm

Location: Online (Zoom)

Guest Speaker: Sarah Barnbrook
Award-winning international advocate for digital safety and ethical technology, Founder of Away from Keyboard (AFK) Inc., and accredited UN delegate. Sarah works globally to strengthen protections for women and girls facing online harm and helps communities understand how emerging technologies reshape risk.

What’s Changed?
From 10 December 2025, new age requirements for social media platforms have come into effect. These changes require age-restricted platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under 16 from creating new accounts or continuing to use existing ones. The goal is to strengthen online safety and reduce exposure to digital harm.
