Cr Laura Binks elected as the new Mayor for Strathbogie Shire Council

Councillor Laura Binks has been elected as the new Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor after Tuesday night’s Statutory Council Meeting.

She is joined by Councillor Paul Murray who was elected to the role of Deputy Mayor.

The election took place after Mayor Cr Binks received the only nomination to run as Mayor by fellow Cr Kristy Hourigan which was seconded by Cr Sally Hayes-Burke.

Outgoing Mayor Cr Chris Raeburn delivered a Mayoral report for the past 12 months, speaking about Council’s achievements during this time.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for appointing me and supporting me throughout my time as Mayor of Strathbogie Shire,” he said.

“It has been my pleasure and a privilege to serve the community and advocate on behalf of the people across this magnificent region we know, love and reside in.

“I continue to be inspired by the ideas, initiatives and projects of the people, committees, clubs and groups who each provide multiple benefits to the region and our people.

“This Council is one of vision, progression and collaboration. I look forward to continuing to work with each elected member of Council to represent our community for the next three years of our term.

“I wish the next elected Mayor every success in the role and my support to assist you fulfill your duty.”

Both Cr Binks and Cr Murray said they were honoured to take on the roles and were looking forward to working with our community and officers over the next 12 months.

“It is a great honour that I take on the role of Mayor of Strathbogie Shire Council,” Mayor Cr Binks said.

Mayor Cr Binks said she had grown and developed her knowledge of local government since being elected and thanked Council staff and her fellow Councillors for their assistance in doing so.

“I’m really excited about the opportunities that we have at Strathbogie Shire to create a forward-thinking and (forward)-acting Shire that is truly representative of the whole municipality.

“I love this part of the world and it’s exciting to be taking on this leadership role for the community and I’m looking forward to the year ahead.”

Deputy Mayor Cr Paul Murray also said it was an exciting time for the Shire.

“It’s been a step learning curve over the last 12-18 months”¦and I look forward to the opportunity of learning and growing,” Cr Murray said.

Cr Murray said he particularly looked forward to carrying out the Council Vision and Community Plan as well as working hard to implement Council’s Climate Change Action Plan.
