Council calls for urgent $3M safety upgrade to Avenel pedestrian rail crossings
Strathbogie Shire Council is ramping up its advocacy for urgent safety upgrades at two pedestrian rail crossings in Avenel, calling on the State Government to invest $3 million to protect the community and support the town’s future growth.
The proposed upgrades to the Bank Street and Ewings Road rail crossings would improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity in one of the region’s fastest-growing townships.
Mayor Claire Ewart Kennedy said Avenel’s growth, driven by new housing developments and increasing visitor numbers, had placed renewed pressure on local infrastructure.
“Avenel is open for business – but safety must come first,” Mayor Ewart-Kennedy said.
“These crossings are essential routes for schoolchildren, young families, and older residents. Without modern, accessible infrastructure, we are putting lives at risk and missing opportunities to unlock Avenel’s full potential.”
Council has been advocating for these upgrades for some time, working with the community, Department of Transport and Planning, and VicTrack to progress concept designs developed in 2022.
The project would include:
- Installation of active pedestrian gates linked to train signals
- Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)-compliant upgrades
- New footpaths and safety features to connect the crossings with key township destinations
The need for investment was highlighted by a recent near-fatal incident involving a 9-year-old girl and a train at the Bank Street crossing, reinforcing the urgent safety risks posed by outdated infrastructure.
“This is about protecting our most vulnerable and creating a safer, more accessible township,” Mayor Ewart-Kennedy said.
“We have a clear plan, strong community backing, and the support of key State stakeholders. Now we need funding to make it happen.”
The total project cost is estimated at $3.1 million, covering safety upgrades, car parking improvements, and landscaping to create a safer and more welcoming gateway to the town.
Council says the investment will not only improve safety but also deliver long-term benefits for Avenel’s liveability and economic development.
“The State Government has an opportunity to partner with us to deliver critical infrastructure that prevents future tragedies, strengthens our economy, and supports a growing, vibrant Avenel,” Mayor Ewart-Kennedy said.
Strathbogie Shire Council is urging the State Government to fund this project now and work with Council to deliver safer rail crossings and a future-ready township.
