The Goulburn River is one of northern Victoria’s most important waterways, playing a vital role in irrigation while also supporting a wide range of recreational activities. Waters created by the Goulburn Weir create popular boating environments along the river, Lake Nagambie, and the weir itself.
Just over an hour from Melbourne, the region has become a sought‑after destination for on‑water recreation. Visitors and locals enjoy activities such as rowing and canoeing, fishing, water skiing, wakeboarding, cruising and powered watercraft use, all set against a scenic rural backdrop.
Beyond the water, the experience is enhanced by nearby cellar doors offering premium local wines, welcoming cafés and restaurants, community markets and a range of accommodation options. Together, these attractions make the Goulburn River and Lake Nagambie a relaxing and versatile destination for day trips or extended stays.
Waterways Manager
Council is no longer responsible for the management of local waterways.

Respect Private Property
Much of the land adjacent to the waterway is private property and should not be used without the permission of the landowner.
Environment
The waters and adjacent land are part of a sensitive environment and water users should:
- avoid making undue noise; particularly in the early morning
- keep rubbish on board and dispose of it upon return to shore
- not pollute the water or adjacent land and take special care not to spill any fuel. Pollution is not only illegal, it destroys the very environment that makes this waterway so popular
