Yesterday was a massive day for Avenel, with the official opening of the Avenel Hall and an exciting funding announcment from the Victorian Government for extensions to the Avenel Kindergarten which will contribute to a $526,000 project in total.
The Avenel Hall renovations were valued at over $400,000, consisted of $300,000 funding from the Victorian Government’s Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund, as well as over $100,000 from Strathbogie Shire Council.
The hall, which was built over 100 years ago, has had a major upgrade and extension, including three new meetings rooms, brand new kitchen, renewal of main toilets, installation of a storm water reuse system and structural improvements to the existing building.
State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes visited Avenel to open the hall and make the funding announcement at the kindergarten.
The Avenel Kindergarton upgrades will involve significant extensions to the buildings, reconfiguration of the entrance, a new reception area, a consultation room and a meeting room.
Extensions will facilitate a greater capacity for kindergarten students, from 28 to approximately 60 places and allow for integration of an early childhood learning centre, fun groups, supported play groups, as well as after school and in future long day care provision.
The project will also see Maternal and Child Health Services co-located at the kindergarten.

Longwood Football Club is partnering with other local community groups to host a festival at Longwood Recreation Reserve on Saturday 3 March from 2-9pm.
If you’re in need of an afternoon under the gum trees with live music and a glass of beer, wine or cider in hand, look no further.
Event organiser and Longwood Football Club Committee Member Kathryn Goodall said the committee was keen to do something different that isn’t offered in the shire.
“We wanted to be able to showcase the small brewers from around the region,” she said.
Attendees will be able to enjoy a refreshing glass from a variety of producers including Strathbogie Brewery, Tooborac Brewery, Maygars Hill Winery and The Cheeky Grog Co.

Strathbogie Shire Council is pleased to advise that construction activity on flood damaged infrastructure has now commenced at a number of locations across the shire.
The assessment and scoping of additional works will continue to progress and is expected to be completed by the end of February 2018.
The early works are focused on addressing identified risks to community safety, improving access to property and to support business activities.
Peak construction activity is expected to occur between March and June 2018, with the majority of works forecast to be completed by the end of June 2018.
Mount Wombat Ward Councillor Alistair Thomson said residents impacted by damaged infrastructure will be relieved to see remedial work underway.
"Council thanks residents for their patience during the period when assessment was undertaken and disaster relief funding secured," Cr Thomson said.
"Council staff have undertaken a detailed examination of shire assets, but if residents are aware of flood damaged infrastructure, and are unsure if the problem has been identified, it is important that it is reported now, before the disaster relief and recovery program expires."
