Guided family walk in Ned Kelly’s footsteps

Families are invited to a guided walk in the footsteps of Ned Kelly followed by a free lunch in Avenel these school holidays.

The family walk on Friday, July 9 will be guided by local historian and author David Willis from 10am to noon, followed by a free lunch in Jubilee Park.

The event will depart from the historic Avenel stone bridge over Hughes Creek, and is a mutual project between Nagambie Lakes Community House, Strathbogie Shire, CASI and Avenel Active.

“This event focuses on spending time with friends and family in the beautiful outdoors and learning about the exciting history which is right outside our doorstep,” Nagambie Lakes Community House coordinator Anna Close said.

She said families could look forward to an easy, interesting walk led by a captivating speaker.

“David Willis has written two books which have both been shortlisted in the Premier’s History Awards, and now he is hoping to also write a short guide about the old Avenel Coach House.

“David has a reputation as a captivating local speaker and people who sign up for the event can count on being treated to a fantastic morning.”

Ms Close encouraged Strathbogie Shire families and grandparents with children staying for the school holidays to join the walk, followed by free lunch (vegan soup and bread rolls) at Jubilee Park.

Ned Kelly lived in Avenel in the early 1860s, staying in the township until aged 12 when his father, John ‘Red’ Kelly died.

While living in Avenel Ned saved a boy, Richard Shelton, from drowning and was rewarded with a green silk cummerbund which he was wearing when he was captured at the Siege of Glenrowan.

“Through the family walk, you can come along and see the places where it all happened and enjoy a wonderful morning in great company,” Ms Close said.

People wanting to join the event, should meet at the historic Avenel bridge, Henry St, by 9.50am for the 10am departure. Due to catering, bookings are essential.
