Shire second-most popular retirement destination

Friday, 8 September, 2017

Its official – the Strathbogie Shire is the second-most popular retirement destination in Victoria, according to recent Census data.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Strathbogie Shire is the second- most popular retirement region for people over 65 years old in Victoria, sharing the spot with the Central Goldfields and is second after Queenscliff (which is number one in Australia).

Census data (from 2016) shows Strathbogie has 27.4 per cent of people over 65 with the overall median age of 52.

Strathbogie was one of 50 Council areas selected nationally with the highest proportion of residents aged at least 65 years of age due to its house value growth performance - and not one of them was located within a capital city.

The median house price in the Strathbogie Shire is $279,912, highlighting that relocating to the Strathbogie Shire upon retirement is an affordable option.

But what is it about the Strathbogie Shire that is so appealing to retirees?

"It’s not surprising to us that a lot of people are choosing to relocate to our beautiful Strathbogie Shire after years living in bigger regional areas or major capital cities. We have friendly, welcoming communities and wonderful natural resources," Strathbogie Shire Mayor Amanda McClaren said.

"Strathbogie Shire is also very welcoming for our younger generations and we encourage First Home Buyers and businesses to consider building or buying in the Shire. We are a wonderfully progressive Council working with our communities to build flourishing places to live, work and play.

"There is state of the art health care in Euroa, Nagambie and Violet Town available, as well as various community groups to get involved in (there are too many to mention) as volunteers like the Euroa Community Cinema, visitor information centres or local emergency services."

Among the different townships’ iconic attractions, she said, include the picturesque Lake Nagambie, Seven Creeks and Polly McQuinn’s, as well as the popular Violet Town Market and rowing regattas were just some of the constant reminders of why the Strathbogie Shire is a great place to retire.

"With the fresh air and wide open spaces, why wouldn’t you want to live amongst some of the most well-known and captivating attractions in Victoria, away from the hustle and bustle of city life?"
