New home for Nagambie Lakes Men's Shed

Wednesday, 12 July, 2017

The Nagambie Lakes Men’s Shed has moved into its new home following a joint funding effort from several passionate community groups and government organisations.

Until now, the Men’s Shed have been using a single garage at the rear of the old Scout Hall, with all workshop activities having to be brought out into the weather, which limited members’ abilities and made it unviable for the shed community to grow.

But with a $60,000 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as funding from Strathbogie Shire Council ($5000), the Australian Men’s Shed Association ($12,500), Bendigo Bank ($8500) and the Men’s Shed itself, a brand new facility has been built on Filson Street.

This new facility provides a 22.5mx7.5m shed with a 15m long workshop, accessible toilet, sizeable kitchen and lounge area, which are perfect for meetings and social gatherings.

In the pipeline since 2015, the project is testament to the various organisations involved in getting it off the ground, such as the Men’s Shed and Nagambie Lion’s Club, who provided the plumbing.

The Men’s Shed has worked hard over the years to assist with funding, applications for additional works to complete the project, including three phase power, extra tools and many donations and resources by funding bodies and the community.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Amanda McClaren said the new men’s shed is perfect for Nagambie and district.

"(It provides) members with a facility that men can use for workshop, tools, equipment and storage of materials," she said.

"Men Sheds are important parts of any local community. They provide a positive and uplifting meeting space for men of all ages who may want something extra to do during their retirement or spare time.

"They also provide a great service for the communities they are a part of, which is why now is the perfect time to get involved."

The Nagambie Lakes Men’s Shed is always on the lookout for new projects and minor repairs.

The Shed will be open on Wednesday and Friday from 9am-2pm, with tea and coffee provided.
