2022 Australian Rowing Champs in Nagambie

17 Mar 2022

Strathbogie Shire Council is excited to host the 2022 Australian Rowing Championships (ARC), which have been moved to Lake Nagambie.

This Rowing Australia event will run from Monday, March 28 to Sunday, April 3 with support from Strathbogie Shire Council and Greater Shepparton City Council.

The location change is due to the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC) being unable to host the ARC due to water contamination issues occurring because of the recent floods. Read RA’s statement published 13 March here.

Strathbogie Shire Council Acting Mayor Cr Paul Murray said we were happy to welcome the rowers with open arms at Council’s premiere rowing facility the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre.

“The Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre is a state and national rowing facility that attracts athletes, coaches and clubs to race the two-kilometre course at esteemed regattas,” Cr Murray said.

“This idyllic location is favoured by competitors and spectators alike for the course layout, water quality and reliability.

“Lake Nagambie was proud to host the Australian Olympic Rowing Team in 2021 to train and prepare for the Tokyo Olympics and boasts many local connections to rowing champions including Lucy Stephan, Pat McNamara, Neville Howell OAM and Neil Lodding.”

Rowing Australia CEO Ian Robson said there had been careful and thorough consideration given to all available venues.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Rowing Victoria, the Strathbogie Shire Council and the Nagambie Rowing Club for stepping up to host the 2022 ARC at short notice,” he said.

“Nagambie was ultimately selected because of a strong commitment and willingness expressed by Rowing Victoria, the Strathbogie Shire Council, Nagambie Rowing Club and adjoining Local Government Authorities to contribute and make this event succeed.”

Rowing Victoria CEO, Ian Jickell said it was a wonderful opportunity to support the local community, especially following the last two years that they have endured due to the pandemic.

“The rowing community throughout the nation are really looking forward to their time at Nagambie and supporting all local businesses and traders,” he said.

Acting Mayor Cr Murray said Council understood there were many people seeking accommodation options for the duration of the event.

“We encourage visitors to explore accommodation options in surrounding areas such as Euroa, Shepparton, Benalla, Bendigo, Seymour, Heathcote, Elmore, Rochester, Kyabram, Numurkah, Kilmore and Echuca,” Cr Murray said.

“Council is also exploring some other innovative options regarding accommodation and more information about this will be provided soon.

“We’re working with Lets Go Motorhomes and have put up to 500 motorhomes on hold for competitors and their families.

“These can be picked up from Sydney or Melbourne and driven to a campsite (like the free camping at Longwood Recreation Reserve) near the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre. To enquire go to www.letsgomotorhomes.com.au

“We are determined to make this the best championships you have seen.”

Spectator tickets for the 2022 ARC in Nagambie can still be purchased via Ticketmaster.
