| National Human Papilloma (HPV) Vaccination Program | | The Commonwealth Government has funded the cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil, for girls and women aged 12 to 26. The Gardasil vaccine is a three dose course of vaccine administered at 0, 2 months and 6 months.
The Gardasil vaccine protects against infection from some strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) if individuals are vaccinated before they are infected with them. The strains of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that Gardasil protects against, causes around 70 per cent of all cervical cancers. The National Human Papilloma (HPV) Vaccination Program will commence from April 2007. The program will be targeting females aged 12 to 18 years in a secondary school based immunisation program administered by local councils as follows: | |

| General Practitioners, community-based immunisation providers and Councils will be will be able to access the Gardasil (Human Papilloma virus) vaccine from July 2007 for administration to females aged 18 to 26 years of age.
The full course of three doses must be completed before the end of June 2009 and before the woman reaches age 27 years. The vaccine has not been approved for use by the Therapeutic Goods administration (TGA) in women older than 26 years.
The Immuvan will visit all secondary schools from April onwards to administer this vaccine.
