| Weed Checking Continues
Residents of Strathbogie Shire care about the spread of weeds in their area. To tackle this problem, Council is continuing with it's Rural Land Rate as a part of its Land Management Program.
The Rural Land Rate is a special rate that is available to rural land that is being managed in a way that minimises the spread of weeds and vermin. Officers of the Department of Primary Industries and Council check properties to ensure that weed control is underway, thus determining the eligibility for these landowners to be charged at the special Rural Land Rate.
These checks have indicated that many people are concerned about the spread of weeds, and are putting in a consistent effort to protect their land. However, it is important that in relation to weeds like Paterson's Curse, everyone remembers to take care and action. Preventing the spread of weeds along roadsides and waterways is one of the important steps in controlling the spread, and hopefully the eventual control of weeds.
According to the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Praire Ground Cherry (Tomato Weed) has been identified as a new and emerging weed in Strathbogie Shire's area.
The Prairie Ground Cherry resembles a tomato plant, and it has orange or yellow berries. Anyone who believes that they may have this plant growning on their property should contact DPI officer Simon Bonwick on (03)5735 4300.
