COMMUNITY ORGANISATION OF THE YEAR
Violet Town Friends of the Pool
The Friends of the Pool are a small dedicated group, consisting of David Harrison, Robin Harrison and Robbie Rae.
With a record number of attendance this season of over 19,000 visitors at the pool is an incredible achievement.
Their fundraising allows them to supply goggles, flippers, tubes, noodles, kickboards, toys for the toddler pool, equipment for volleyball and cricket, bean bags, banana lounges, tables and chairs and more.
It is also helps funds party tables for birthdays, random sausage sizzles, plus Friday night games.
They tin rattle at the market for funds to buy furniture and equipment, plant out areas. All this makes for a wonderful, memorable experience. They are a credit to our community.
COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR
A Nightmare on Cowslip Street
The Halloween festival was an outstanding success. Organised by the newly formed Violet Town Business Group (a sub-committee of the Violet Town Action Group), with the aim to bring the community together and involve new residents of Violet Town.
The Business Group did an amazing job. It was family friendly, good fun with many hundreds attending coming dressed in costumes.
Feedback from the community has been very positive. Visitors came from Euroa, Shepparton and Benalla for the evening.
YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
Callum mows the Violet Town Cemetery regularly and voluntarily mows the naturestrip of elderly neighbours. He is part of the Benalla Bushrangers Cricket Club as a 'most improved player'.
He represented Benalla P-12 College at zone and regional cross country in athletics.
He is a very steady and helpful younger member of the Violet Town community.
SENIOR CITIZENS OF THE YEAR
Ken and Fran Byrne
Ken and Fran have worked tirelessly for our community for many years and have given all their time without a second thought. It is just in their nature to lend a hand anywhere it's needed.
They are involved in as many projects that they can fit into their busy schedule, including but not limited to: Uniting Church (active members), lay preaching, Violet Town Primary School religious education, Red Cross, Samaritan Purse Christmas gift boxes, Violet Town Lions, Probus, Violet Town Bowls Club and the Violet Town Hall Committee.
CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
Kate has been very involved in the community for many years, but in 2016, Kate's contribution to Violet Town and the Shire has been outstanding. Kate has written grant applications, for the school, HREP and VTAG, with a very high success rate, has been passionately involved and led the HREP project since its beginning in 2004. She is a board member of GBCMA, chairperson of the VT Market Committee, and has shown leadership in reviewing and revamping market processes in a very professional manner - but is also very hands-on on market day as well.
As chairperson of Strathbogie Voices, she has passionately raised concerns in a positive manner at all levels of government. Kate ran the last COW and wrote up the report - and is willing to put up her hand to help for all community groups. Kate is an outstanding community leader.
