Equine Industry

The Shire is the Horse Capital of Victoria with an impressive range of all equine pursuits, including thoroughbred breeding and training, standardbreds, pony club, eventing and carriage driving to highlight a select few.

The multi-million dollar thoroughbred sector is a major contributor to the local and regional economy. The growth in this industry is due to the region’s temperate climate, access to Melbourne and availability of suitable land.

The majority of the state’s commercial thoroughbred farms are located in the region; they include well known stallion farms Blue Gum, Swettenham Stud, Darley and Independent Stallions, as well as a growing number of commercial properties established as broodmare and yearling farms including Erinvale Thoroughbreds, Phoenix Broodmare Farm and Fulmen Park.

With more than 50 stallions residing in the region, some of the best include Australian bred and raced Elvstoem, Dash for Cash, and Niello plus international champion race horses Ratki (World Champion Miler), Argonaut (South African Champion 2yo) and Artie Schiller (Breeders Cup Mile winner).
